Printed Text: LEGEND OF THE WHITE CANOE Living beside mighty Niagara, the peaceful tribe of the Onondagas believed that its roar was the voice of the Great Spirit. Each year it was the custom to offer the fairest of their maidens to be sacrificed. The last of the maidens to be thus sacrificed was Lealwala, the daughter of their Eagle Chief. After witnessing the sacrificial plunge over the Falls, joined his daughter in death after the same fashion. Supposedly, Lealwala, known to us as the Maid of the Mist, and her father still live in a crystal cave behind the waterfall.
